Traffic signal sync nearing completion

"KMC is also considering starting traffic signals that were not used as there was not enough strength in the city traffic police to man these. In such cases, we will ensure that traffic congestion does not take place if signals are kept off. KMC had asked the agency hired for synchronisation to review the situation of traffic every three months and make changes in the signalling system accordingly. That one was not synchronised with the signal at Janata Bazaar Chowk and this resulted in chaos. Commuters may face challenges while synchronisation takes place as several adjustments need to be made.

Kolhapur: The traffic situation along major roads is likely to improve as the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) is going to complete synchronisation of traffic signals in the next few days.Synchronising the 19 signals from main roads in the city has been going on for four months. Although a decision in the matter was taken last year, the exercise could not take place earlier as the response from private agencies to take up the task was poor.A senior KMC official, requesting anonymity, said, "Trials of signals along some routes have begun. Synchronisation for the rest of the signals will be completed soon. Commuters may face challenges while synchronisation takes place as several adjustments need to be made."KMC is also considering starting traffic signals that were not used as there was not enough strength in the city traffic police to man these. The signal at Shahaji Law College Chowk stopped functioning three years ago. That one was not synchronised with the signal at Janata Bazaar Chowk and this resulted in chaos. With synchronisation now nearly done, it can be started again."Along some routes, it may not be necessary to keep signals on all day. In such cases, we will ensure that traffic congestion does not take place if signals are kept off. The agency has studied the flow of traffic on such routes. We are going to request the traffic department to deploy adequate cops at major signals," the official said.Since signals were installed five years ago, the number of commuters has increased. Congestion on main roads is now the norm. KMC had asked the agency hired for synchronisation to review the situation of traffic every three months and make changes in the signalling system accordingly.
