Kolhapur: Several Shiv Sena workers led by city MLA Rajesh Kshirsagar hit the streets of Lakshmipuri protesting the poor condition of roads on Monday. Lakshmipuri is one of the busiest trading places in the city. Roads leading from the interiors of the district converge here. Sena workers sat in protest for about half an hour, disrupting traffic.Kshirsagar said the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) was responsible for the maintenance of city roads, many of which were first laid over 30 years ago and never seen any maintenance work since the time they were first constructed.“Huge potholes have developed, and we’ve seen several accidents on these roads. Despite repeated petitions, the civic officials have done nothing. Traders and commuters are angry,” Kshirsagar said.Local corporators and civic officials arrived at the spot of the protest and assured Kshirsagar that the roads will be constructed through funds from the state’s Nagarotthan scheme.Additional commissioner Shridhar Patankar said a meeting would be arranged with civic chief Abhijeet Chaudhari for immediate sanction of funds. The protesters scheduled a meeting with Chaudhari next Monday, at which local traders would also be present. In one week, a proper survey will be conducted of roads and drains to estimate what works will need to be undertaken.Additional commissioner Patankar said, “I have asked officials of the public works department to carry out a survey and suggest an estimate. Some road repair works can be carried out through Nagarotthan while the rest will be constructed through KMC funds.”
