NCP jittery as Satej Patil says he won’t back Mahadik’s candidature for LS elections

Kolhapur: A day after the visit of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar to the city, Congress leader Satej Patil on Sunday hinted that he is not going to support the sitting MP Dhananjay Mahadik if he is fielded again.After inaugurating the road construction work at Morewadi, Patil said, “We helped in last Loksabha election despite differences. Congress workers have been betrayed. Hence we will not help them in upcoming elections.”Though Patil did not mention Mahadik, it was clear that he was referring to him. It is widely claimed that his support led to Mahadik’s win despite the ‘Modi Wave’ factor in 2014 election. Patil was defeated in the last assembly elections after Mahadik supported his cousin brother Amal Mahadik, who contested on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.It is for the first time that Patil, who is a two-time legislator of the Congress, has spoken about his opposition to Mahadik. Patil’s public comments have left NCP leaders in jitters.While Mahadik was not available for a comment, a senior NCP leader from the district said, “We had hoped that the difference would be ironed out during our party chief’s visit. However, now it seems that we cannot expect Patil’s support.”NCP leaders said that there is a demand from their party workers that Mahadik should not be given a ticket.Patil is further infuriated after the NCP inducted his father and veteran Congressman D Y Patil in the party. Patil and his supporters feel that the NCP move to induct his father was to force him to back NCP’s nominee.
