KOLHAPUR: Two standing committee members - Pravin Kesarkar and Madhavi Gavandi - are going to resign from the panel on Thursday. The duo will submit their resignations to mayor Sarita More during the special general body meeting called on Thursday. Both were inducted into the committee after Dipa Magdum and Sachin Patil resigned ahead of the election to select the chairman of the committee. The election was won by Congress nominee Sharangdhar Deshmukh. It is now confirmed that both Magdum and Patil will now make a comeback into the committee. Both are facing disqualification owing to their inability in providing valid caste certificates on time to the election commission.A senior Congress corporators said, "Both Magdum and Patil were asked to resign and instead nominate new members to avoid defeat in the election for the post of chairman. We got to know that disqualification may take place just ahead of the election and the results would have been something else and against our expectation. Now, both will be re-nominated in the standing committee and even though they are disqualified now, Deshmukh will remain chairman for the next one year."If the two corporators would have been disqualified, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee would have won the election. Last year, BJP corporator Ashish Dhawale had won the post after two corporators of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had defected at the last moment. Both Magdum (Congress) and Patil (NCP) are close to their party leaders and therefore they will face no opposition in getting an entry back into the committee. Kesarkar and Gavandi have been assured that they will be given posts in future which made them agree to resign from the 16 member committee.
