KOLHAPUR: Local Crime Branch, Kolhapur on Monday arrested a 45-year-old Kenyan man for allegedly attempting to cheat a businessman based in Ichalkaranji on the pretext of selling him foreign currency including Euro and US dollars. The man had demanded Rs 63 lakh, telling the businessman he would make Rs 3.20 crore. A case was registered at Shivajinagar police station.Abhijeet Hambirrao Kharade, 29, resident of Ichalkaranji, Hatkanangle taluka, lodged a complaint in this regard. The arrested man, Muthay Isaha, 45, from College Road, near United Nations Avenue, Nairobi Kenya , was booked under Section 498 (D) (making or possessing instruments or materials for forgoing or counterfeiting currency notes or bank notes), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 417 (punishment for cheating) of Indian Penal Code.Abhinav Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police said, "We detained him from a hotel in Kolhapur. He came to India four months ago."The officer said Muthay contacted Kharade on phone and told him that he had currency worth Rs 8.40 crore in Euro and US dollar bills."He said the notes, for security reasons, were in black colour. He met Kharade and told him that after cleaning these black notes with a chemical, all the notes will appear in their original form. He showed a demonstration to Kharade applying chemical to two black notes, processing them for four hours and later showed two notes, one was of a 300 Euro bill and the other was a 200 dollar one. He later told Kharade that he needed money to purchase the chemical to process all the notes. He asked Kharade Rs 63 lakh to purchase the chemical and offered Rs 3.20 crore in return," the officer said."Kharade came to us with the complaint and a crime branch team went to the hotel where he was put up and nabbed him. During the raid, we seized the chemical, the black coloured 2,200 papers wrapped in 22 bundles and other materials. He also had cotton, gum and hand gloves for 'processing' the notes. We also seized cash of Rs 13,250 and three foreign currency notes of denomination of 200 dollar, 200 Euro and 300 Euro," the officer said.
