There is no cinema if there is no spectator, says Govind Nihalani

Kolhapur: Veteran cinematographer and six times national award winner director Govind Nihalani on Thursday at the inaugural ceremony of the seventh Kolhapur International Film Festival (KIFF) said that, “There is no cinema if there is no spectator.”Nihalani, the 79-year-old veteran filmmaker who is known for his breakthrough cinema in the early 80s based on socio-political issues, was felicitated with the Kalamaharshi Baburao Painter award in the inaugural ceremony in presence of veteran actress Rohini Hattangadi.Nihalani said, “When we watch a film, we form an opinion based on our own experiences. So, if ten people watch a film, they derive ten opinions. Cinema is a powerful medium and its real power comes from the viewer. We have to create awareness among viewers that they are the ones to give meaning to cinema. Consciousness of cinema culture is very important and needs to be imbibed from a young age.”Nihalani said that the content of the film is not just the story but the real content is that which goes inside our brain and this kind of learning needs to be passed on to the audiences to create a lasting impact of films.Rohini Hattangadi, the veteran actress and winner of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for best supporting actress for her role in the film ‘Gandhi’ in 1982, said in her speech that with the availability of the digital medium for cinema viewing, she still prefers theatres over small screens. “The film society movement and the film festival movement help the audience to revisit theatres,” she added.Chandrakant Joshi, President of the Kalamaharshi Baburao Painter Film Society, during the inaugural ceremony, said that the KIFF is gaining popularity with each passing year. “This kind of festival will help in producing better content as well as a better audience,” he said.
