Divisional commissioner asks officials to ensure free and fair elections

According to rough estimates, around 5,200 police personnel will be needed for Kolhapur city and district alone.Police have identified more than 3,000 individuals, who have criminal background. The police machinery has been asked to prepare itself by February 15. Meanwhile, Kolhapur police has geared up for the Lok Sabha election, for which the model code of conduct is expected to be in force in the first week of March.

Kolhapur: Divisional commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar on Thursday instructed the officials involved in the upcoming Loksabha elections to work in sync with the police officials to conduct a free and fearless election.During a review meeting of the pre-poll preparations at the district collectorate, Mhaisekar said, “Every polling centre should be equipped with ramp, washroom, drinking water, electricity and other essential services. All election officers and police officers should jointly inspect the facilities at polling centres. They have to make sure that all guidelines laid by the Election Commission of India are followed.”To make sure law and order remains unhampered, ample police force, homeguard, vehicles and squad should be made available, besides following guidelines about sensitive polling centres, code of conduct, he said.Mhaisekar also reviewed the workshop for polling centre staff members, and a few polling centres in Kolhapur South and Kolhapur North constituencies.A press release from the district information office said the divisional commissioner reviewed the awareness campaigns for voter verifiable paper audit trail and electronic voting machines. He also reviewed a polling centre in Panhala constituency and the facilities available for the divyang voters. He instructed the officials to fulfil all the necessary guidelines.The meeting was attended by district collector Avinash Subhedar, superintendent of police Abhinav Deshmukh, additional district collector Nandkumar Katkar, additional superintendents of police Tirupati Kakade, Shriniwas Ghadge, resident deputy district collector Sanjay Shinde, deputy district election officer Snehal Bhosale, acting regional transport officer Ajit Shinde, along with the nodal officers and other concerned officials. Meanwhile, Kolhapur police has geared up for the Lok Sabha election, for which the model code of conduct is expected to be in force in the first week of March. The police machinery has been asked to prepare itself by February 15. Police are also looking for more than 400 people, who are either absconding or wanted is criminal cases.Police plan to set up 28 check points in city and district to avoid smuggling of cash, liquor and weapons and launch surprise checking, combing operations and nakabandi to ensure free and fair elections.Police sources said all people, who have licence to possess firearms, have been asked to surrender their weapons during the electioneering.
