Lukewarm farmer response to proposed cane payment

The SSS has raised the issue of interest on the delayed and part payment of the bills, on which the sugar factories are non-committal. SSS leader Savkar Madnaik has demanded that sugar factories should consider the price of sugar on the day when the delivery is made. The SSS has sought clarification on the time-bound payment to the farmers, who are not ready to accept sugar, with 15% interest. However, they are waiting for the farmers applications for the past three days.The SSS has raised certain issues because of which farmers are reluctant to file applications within the deadline. Ankush Andolan, a social organization, has challenged the decision in the Bombay High Court, which has added to the uncertainty.

Kolhapur: Lack of consensus between the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) and sugar mill operators over the modality of accepting sugar instead of money has resulted in a lukewarm response from the farmers.The farmers are reluctant to file an application, which will be considered to be his consent to accept sugar in place of money because of some questions raised by the SSS. Sources in the sugar industry said that only one sugar factory had received some applications from farmers.Sugar factories have appealed to farmers on Thursday to fill up their applications within seven days. However, they are waiting for the farmers applications for the past three days.The SSS has raised certain issues because of which farmers are reluctant to file applications within the deadline. The SSS has appealed to farmers not to sign any application till their questions are answered satisfactorily.It has also demanded that the price of the sugar should not be fixed. The SSS, which has been fighting for the issue, has also asked that factories should take responsibility of the transportation of the sugar, which will be delivered by the factories.The SSS has formed various teams which are visiting factories to get clarity about the issues that they have raised. The factories are non-committal about the same. The SSS has sought clarification on the time-bound payment to the farmers, who are not ready to accept sugar, with 15% interest. The factories have maintained that the money will be given to farmers when the funds will become available, which is not acceptable to the SSS. Ankush Andolan, a social organization, has challenged the decision in the Bombay High Court, which has added to the uncertainty.
