Passport fake, confirms Kenyan embassy

“We have sent details to the Nigerian embassy to find out about his nationality, the Nigerian embassy is still to respond,” the police officer said.The suspect’s police custody had expired on Monday. He had cheated traders based in Vita to the tune of Rs 60 lakh.“We expect that Vita police will be taking his custody for further investigation. We have appealed to people to come forward if they have been cheated in this fashion by a foreigner and register a complaint with us,” the police officer said. Kolhapur: Shivajingar police investigating the foreign national who was arrested for cheating traders from Ichalkaranji and Vita have received confirmation from the Kenyan embassy that the Kenya passport the man possessed was fake; the man is not a Kenyan citizen.Police inspector IH Patil of the Shivajinagar police station said, “The Kenyan embassy has informed us that the passport with the name Iasi Kipengetich Muthay, showing him as a citizen of Kenya is fake; there is no citizen of Kenya with that name currently in India.”During interrogation, the man had claimed that his real name was Anthony Oyemina. He had said that he was from Nigeria.

He was produced before a local court on Monday and sent to magistrate’s custody.Police sources said a similar case had been registered against the same man at Vita police station, where he had claimed that his name is Mark Willams and he belonged to Namibia. He had cheated traders based in Vita to the tune of Rs 60 lakh.“We expect that Vita police will be taking his custody for further investigation. We have appealed to people to come forward if they have been cheated in this fashion by a foreigner and register a complaint with us,” the police officer said.
