KOLHAPUR: The Congress is expected to make an official announcement about the party giving up on its one time bastion, Sangli Lok Sabha constituency, to Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) led by Raju Shetti. It will now fight only on two seats in western Maharashtra - Pune and Solapur. Sources in Congress and SSS confirmed that both the parties have worked out a formula, which is expected to pacify the agitated Congress workers who had made a forceful demand to party high command that it should not surrender the Sangli seat. The Congress had suggested that SSS should select either Wardha or Shirdi, a suggestion that was accepted by Shetti. However, NCP leaders convinced SSS to leave Buldhana seat, promising that it would allot them a seat in the assembly elections.Following this Sangli again became a point of contention. But when Congress announced its candidates from Wardha and Shirdi, a signal was given to the SSS that it can be accommodated in Sangli.Sources said that negotiation between Congress and SSS are almost finalized and a formal announcement would be made very soon. The SSS was asked that it should field a candidate which would be accepted by the Congress workers.SSS and Congress leaders believe that two politically powerful families in Sangli - Patil and Kadam - can help the party snatch the seat from BJP.Pratik Patil, Vishal Patil and Prithviraj Patil were other names considered by the Congress leaders.Vishwajeet Kadam had announced that he was not interested in Lok Sabha election.Congress leaders, however, came to a conclusion that none of the names were strong enough to take on the BJP which has grown in Sangli in the past few years.Jayesh Kadam's possible candidature assumes significance as Vishwajeet Kadam and Vishal Kadam, a strong contender for Lok Sabha were involved in a verbal duel a few days ago. They blamed each other for the Congress's poor situation in Sangli.
