Kolhapur: A week after Bombay High Court rapped the investigating team over tardiness in investigations of the February 2015 murder of CPI leader Govind Pansare, the state government announced that the prize money for anyone offering information that would lead to the arrest of suspects Sarang Akolkar and Vinay Pawar would be Rs50 lakh, hiked from the earlier Rs10 lakh.Seven more officers have been inducted into the investigation team, according to a press release from Kolhapur police on Wednesday .On February 26, the state government had declared a prize of Rs 10 lakh to anyone offering information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Hearing a public interest litigation filed by members of Pansare’s family and also kin of rationalist and doctor Narendra Dabholkar, who was murdered in 2013, a division bench of the HC comprising Justices SC Dharmadhikari and BP Colabawala on March 18 expressed displeasure over the inability of police to show that earnest efforts were being made to nab the accused.Reprimanding state police, the court observed that if the current methods were adopted, the likelihood of the accused being arrested were unlikely. “We do not think that Tirupati Kakade, the investigating officer, who is a senior police official, functioning in District Kolhapur is efficient enough to conduct the investigation for he feels inhibited and is reluctant to give reasons to this court. Let the additional chief secretary, home, Government of Maharashtra remain present in this court and inform us on the investigation process,” the court ruled. The matter will come for hearing on Thursday.District SP Abhinav Deshmukh declined to comment on the matter. “As SIT is investigating the case, we are not the authority to speak on this issue. We received a government order regarding increasing the reward prize and have issued the press note in this regard.”Kolhapur police released a video on Twitter requesting the general public to aid in nabbing the duo. The prize money announced in the video, though, was Rs10 lakh. “The videos released on our official Twitter handle are old. We will make new videos and release them soon,” Deshmukh said. While filing supplementary charge sheet in the case on November 29, 2016, Vinay Pawar was named as third accused and Sarang Akolkar as fourth accused – the two are absconding. Both men have been missing since the blast at a trade centre in Madgaon, Goa on October 16, 2009.According to Kolhapur police, Pawar along with Sarang Akolkar had met one of the witnesses to get training to prepare weapons on the direction of Virendra Tawade, the second accused in the Pansare murder case.Pansare and his wife Uma were attacked near their residence by unidentified men on a motorcycle on February 16, 2015.
