Mercury hovers around 38degC not much respite in sight

KOLHAPUR: The maximum temperature has been steadily rising in the city, with the mercury hovering around 38 degrees celsius and the IMD stating that similar conditions will prevail in the coming week.The city recorded the month’s highest of 39 degrees celsius, a degree above normal, on Tuesday while the mercury touched 38 on Wednesday.According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the temperature is likely to stay same, except occasional showers in the coming days.The IMD report stated that the minimum temperature too was higher by two degrees, that 23 degrees celsius.The IMD forecast data said that the city is likely to experience overcast conditions on April 1 and April 2.The Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, has stated that the maximum temperature was appreciably above normal over north Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra, south Gujarat region, Saurashtra and Kutch. It was above normal over south Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada and normal elsewhere over the region.There was no big change in the minimum temperatures over the region and that they were above normal over north Konkan, South Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, North Gujarat region, Saurashtra and Kutch and normal elsewhere over the region, it added.A trader in Kolhapur city said the sale of air-conditioners and refrigerators is expected to rise in view of the rising temperatures and also because of the upcoming festive season.“Summer is at its prime already in the month of March and it is quite likely that we will witness the maximum temperature crossing the 40 degrees mark in Kolhapur,” he said.“Various discount offers will keep buyers interested in opting better deals on home appliances.”With the shift in the temperature, medical practitioners have advised citizens to keep hydrated and avoid going out in the sun without protection such as applying creams on the body and wearing caps and sun glasses.
