A fiesty 68-year-old cancer survivor not only caught the young thief who had snatched her handbag on the Kolhapur-Mahalaxmi Express, she also got him to tell her where he had hidden it. The thief was later identified as Ahmed Ilyas Sunsura, who had jumped parole in a murder case registered in Surat. The woman Mugdha Gole and her husband Avadhoot had boarded the train at CSMT on October 31 to go to Amba Bai temple, Kolhapur. "After we boarded at 7.30pm, I kept my handbag containing my phone, ticket, PAN card, Aadhaar card and some cash with my husband to check which side of our compartment the western toilet was located," said Gole, who is a Mulund resident. "When I came out, I saw a man carrying my handbag readying to get off the train. Alarmed, I grabbed my bag, but the man was young and managed to escape. I somehow balanced myself and came to my seat. My husband told me that two men had come to enquire about the seating arrangement and one of them lifted the bag and ran," she told mid-day. The thief, Ahmed Ilyas Sunsura "Later, when I got down the train, hoping to find the robber, I spotted him some distance away and caught him by the collar. He struggled to free himself insisting he had not taken my handbag. I am a senior citizen and a cancer survivor but I fought with the man and managed to push him onto the train all alone. There were many people around but no one came to help me," she recalled. "After getting him onto the train, the man again pushed me and started to run inside the compartment. This time I shouted for help and three onboard TTEs started to chase him. The man got down at platform 17 and started to run but he was caught on platform 14," Gole said. Sunsura was brought to Goles seat, where he kept denying taking her handbag. But when she told him she would not register any case if he told her where it was, Sunsura confessed that he had kept it on the fan in one of the toilets in the AC compartment of the same train. An RPF official at CSMT told mid-day that Sunsura had been handed over to GRP, CSMT, after documentation. "We got Sunsuras custody on October 31. During interrogation, we learnt that he is an accused in a murder case registered at Surat, GRP. We contacted our counterparts in Surat and got to know that he has jumped parole and never returned to Lajpore Central jail," a GRP official told mid-day. Another GRP official said, "Sunsura was granted five-day parole during April 22-26, 2019. He was supposed to return on April 27 but reached Mumbai instead. He had been sleeping on footpaths at Mumbai Central and committing crimes. He has been handed over to Surat GRP." April Month when Ahmed Ilyas Sunsura jumped parole in Surat
