Dhangars to block h’way at Udgaon today

Kolhapur: Members from the Dhangar community in Shirol village will resort to blocking the Kolhapur-Sangli highway on Thursday to press for their demand of getting reservation under the Schedule Tribes (ST) category. Amar Pujari, member of Shirol Tehsil Dhangar Reservation Committee, said, The government is ignoring our demand for reservation under the ST category. Hence, we will be blocking the highway in Udgaon village on Thursday. Girls and women from the community led the march and a delegation submitted a petition to the district collector. The community has decided to pitch for reservation through the OBC category after studying the Gaikwad Commissions recommendations. Leaders from various political parties also participated in the rally. Meanwhile, the Mali community is protesting against the inclusion of Marathas in the OBC quota, and Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange has called off his hunger strike with a warning to renew the agitation if the quota is not granted within 30 days. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured the OBC and Kunbi communities that their reservation will not be affected by the reservation for Marathas.
