Kolhapur: The leaders of the city unit of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday met mayor Hasina Faras demanding that the Kolhapur municipal corporation should not seek denotification of state highways. After the Supreme Court's order to shut the bars, liquor shops located along 500 meters of the state and the national highways, state revenue minister Chandrakant Patil had said that the state is ready to denotify the highways if the civic bodies are ready to maintain them.Uttam Patil, leader of AAP, said, the Supreme Court has taken a historic decision and the common people have welcomed it. Liquor shops along the Kolhapur-Ratnagiri highway have been closed."We have learnt that the KMC is bringing in a proposal to show its readiness to denotify the highways so that the liquor shop owners are relieved from the SC order. We have asked the mayor that people will resort to an agitation if a proposal is brought into the civic general body meeting for approval," he said. For denotification of the highways, the KMC has to pass a resolution in the general body meeting. The civic administration has already made it clear that it will proceed to bring the resolution in the GB only after clear directions from the state government. The AAP leaders alleged that earlier the road construction project was approved by the GB, which gave the rights to the contractor to collect toll from common people."The citizens fiercely opposed the toll imposed by the corporators on them. If the proposal to denotify the highways for the benefit of liquor traders is passed, people will have to resort to an agitation," said Patil.Recently, the Peasants and Workers Party too opposed the state government's suggestion to the civic bodies on the state highways. The district administration shut over 1,000 liquor shops and bars.
