Mixed response to traders strike over GST

Kolhapur: The traders strike in city on Thursday received mixed response with most of the shops remaining shut.Businesses at Laxmipuri, Shahupuri and Rajarampuri area came to a standstill, grain merchants had also shut their shops to protest against the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST). "We are against 5% GST on packaged and branded food and clothes. ""This is just a token show of protest and we will intensify our agitation, if the government does not change its stand on the revision of GST for certain sectors," he said. The bandh was called by Kolhapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).Lalit Gandhi, president of KCCI said, "The strike was to show our resentment and protest against some of the provisions of the GST that will be implemented in the country from July 1. We want government to withdraw the tax on textile sector and not levy any tax on it," he said.The strike was held nationwide on Thursday and we were told at a state-level meeting to organise the strike in Kolhapur district as well," Gandhi said.The traders from city gathered at the office of KCCI on Thursday morning to protest against GST and handed over the memorandum of their demands to the district collector, sales tax office and office of Excise Commissioner on Thursday afternoon.
