KMT to recruit 50 new staff members as it manages losses

We are planning to schedule the duties of the staff so that the existing staff can be utilised effectively. The KMT right now requires around 150 conductors to run the buses in two to three shifts. Over 20 trips to various localities have been cancelled as there are very few conductors on duty. "Currently, there are around 108 buses with the KMT. The KMT is planning to terminate around 30 drivers after failing to turn up for their daily duty for over 10 days at a stretch without any medical or genuine reason.

Kolhapur: The Kolhapur Municipal Transport (KMT) is paying a heavy price for shortage of conductors or tickets collectors as they are facing revenue losses of Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 on a daily basis.Meanwhile, the transport administration has invited applications for recruiting 50 ticket collectors and the process to appoint them will come to an end in the next 15 days.The shortage of staff is due to the inability of those appointed to continue the job on a daily wage basis. Moreover, the administration also took action of termination against some owing to their failure to perform their duty effectively.But, as the losses are mounting each day, the KMT administration is hurrying the recruitment process of conductors.A senior KMT official said, "Around 10 buses have been stopped from running in the afternoon and evening. Over 20 trips to various localities have been cancelled as there are very few conductors on duty. We have invited applications through walk-in interviews and civic chief Abhijeet Chaudhari is finalising the list."Currently, there are around 108 buses with the KMT. Of which, 75 are newly inducted. The KMT right now requires around 150 conductors to run the buses in two to three shifts. As of now, very few ticket collectors are permanent and most of them are on a contract or daily wage basis.The transport administration currently cannot afford recruiting staff on a permanent basis as they will have to give higher salaries and other perks."In the last six months that there has been a shortage of staff, we have observed that the passenger count has also decreased and it might dip further if the buses are not started. We are planning to schedule the duties of the staff so that the existing staff can be utilised effectively. Though the requirement of drivers is high right now, we are sure that the new 50 conductors will help us run the buses effectively," said the official.Recently, the elected representatives of the KMT's committee claimed that the losses caused due to the absence and shortage of drivers and conductors amounts to Rs 50,000 every day. The KMT is planning to terminate around 30 drivers after failing to turn up for their daily duty for over 10 days at a stretch without any medical or genuine reason.
