Maharashtra govt to provide agricultural land to war widows

PUNE: The state government has decided to provide agricultural land to women whose husbands have died in the line of duty while serving for the armed forces.A decision to this effect was taken last week at a meeting in Mumbai, which was chaired by the chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis Major General Rajiv Edwards, General Officer Commanding of Uttar Maharashtra Sub-Area Col Suhas Jatkar (Retd), director of Maharashtra Sainik Welfare Board (MSWB), principal secretary Pravin Pardeshi and senior revenue officials were present at this meeting.Talking to TOI over the phone on Monday, Pardeshi said, "We have decided to provide agricultural land to widows whose husbands have died in the line of duty. Priority shall be given to them (widows)." He added that there is a special provision for land allotment to ex-servicemen and war widows in the state."Depending on the case, the land alotted could be between 2 hectare and 2.5 hectare," Pardeshi added.In August, Southern Army Commander Lt Gen P M Hariz had a meeting with the chief minister, where he made a presentation on certain issues ranging from security to land and veteran support. "The army commander had requested the state government to increase the compensation amount to families of martyrs to Rs 30 lakh, along the lines of a few other states. The chief minister had responded positively and the final decision this will be taken soon," a senior official said.Col Jatkar added, "The decision to provide agricultural land is a good move. Though we had not submitted any such proposal, the CM himself took the decision. This decision will benefit as many as 10,000 war widows."The state, however, is yet to issue a government resolution (GR) in this regard. "Once, we get an official GR and instruc tions, we will decide how this can be implemented with the help of Zilla Sainik Welfare Offi cers," Jatkar added.Sources in the MSWB claimed that the financial condition of many war widows was very poor due to lack of income sources. They are mainly dependent on their pension amounts."If they get agricultural land with adequate water supply, these widows can run provide for their families and educate their children," the sources said, ad ding that the move will help war widows lead a comfortable and respectable life.
