Of 1.2 lakh only 55 thousand students get uniform grants

Kolhapur: A recent report from district primary education department reveals that around 55,000 students have recieved the uniform money from the schools, while over 64,000 students are still awaiting. A total 1.2 lakh beneficiaries in the district are eligible for the financial grant of Rs 400 for the school uniform.Of 1.20 lakh beneficiaries in the district, 85,000 bank accounts have been opened till September 11. The benificiaries are eligible for the uniform money under the Sarva Shikha Abhiyan.The report further says that Rs 4.8 crore have been distributed to the school management committees across the district as the grant of the uniform money. Shirol and Panhala taluka have 13,000 and 10,000 benificiary students respectively. The distribution of uniform or the uniform money and the textbooks is something that needs to be taken seriously by the administration.It has to be noted that, to bring in transparency, the government had decided to deposit the money directly into beneficiaries account from this year onwards.

While as the uniform grant has been deposited only in 55,200 accounts, the report reveals.As the report suggests, Hatkanagale taluka has the most number of beneficiaries, more than 20,000, followed by Karveer taluka where the number of beneficiaries stands at 17,570. Shirol and Panhala taluka have 13,000 and 10,000 benificiary students respectively. The benificiaries are eligible for the uniform money under the Sarva Shikha Abhiyan.The report further says that Rs 4.8 crore have been distributed to the school management committees across the district as the grant of the uniform money. "But the delay in depositing the uniform grants to the benificiaries' accounts is caused by the banks, saying they have too much work load," the report reads.Despite repeated attempts, Subhash Chougule, district primary education officer, could not be contacted for his comments on the issue.Sattappa Mohite, a city based education activist said that the rest of the beneficiaries need to have their amount deposited in their accounts soon.
