KOLKATA: Kolkata Traffic Police has finally handed over a list of roads that need immediate repair to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation . The move is aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow across the city.Top police sources said that there are around 150 spots in the city which need to be repaired on an urgent basis. The list points to the exact spots which need patchwork — some roads have multiple such stretches. Twenty five traffic guards had prepared this list for Lalbazar over the past two weeks.“Besides the arterial roads like Diamond Harbour Road and EM Bypass, a few roads in north Kolkata that have tramtracks, like the stretch near RG Kar Hospital, and those having underpasses and a few stretches in the Port area are our prime concern,” said an IPS officer. The meetings held on Friday and Saturday — one of them attended by senior officers of Kolkata Police, including additional CP and DCs, and the commissioner of KMC — at Lalbazar reportedly lasted for several hours.Sources said that besides roads, KMC was also requested to put up median and road dividers at certain places — where they are presently missing — to put a brake on accidents. The meeting also discussed pruning of trees after local guards claimed several traffic signals are no more visible to the motorists due to the growth of trees.Police maintained that KMC senior officials gave them a patient hearing and have assured them of action as far as the police road list is concerned. “They told us that though long-term repairs will be taken up ahead of the Pujas (repair work will not last during the monsoon), temporary repair work will continue throughout the next two months to ensure that no commuter is hassled in any manner,” said an officer. The police top brass also expressed concern over accumulation of rain water and urged all stakeholders, including KMC, to help them maintain flow of traffic by deputing additional means of water drainage at key locations in the city.“Please ensure that you keep us in loop while repairing roads,” an officer reminded KMC. In reply, a KMC representative assured that the roads will be repaired latest by September end — a fortnight before the Pujas.
