Kolkata: 10 kg gold smuggled from Bhutan seized

After the car was stopped, the officials found 10 gold bars, each weighing 1 kg, inside the vehicle. “While there are reports of gold smuggling through Bhutan, we have not seen it coming to Bengal. It is the first time in recent years a large consignment of gold entered West Bengal through Bhutan borders,” said a DRI official. The Saturday seizure has brought the focus on the gold smuggling route via Bhutan.Based on specific inputs the DRI officers nabbed two persons travelling in a hatchback car near Fulbari. The recovered gold bars were handed over by some Bhutanese origin nationals to the accused persons at a hotel situated in Phuentsholling.Earlier in June this year the DRI seized 32kg gold near Siliguri while it was being smuggled from China through the Nathula border.

KOLKATA: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Saturday seized 10 kg gold, worth Rs 3.18 crore from two carriers at Fulbari, Siliguri while the metal was being sneaked into the country via Indo-Bhutan border . The Saturday seizure has brought the focus on the gold smuggling route via Bhutan.Based on specific inputs the DRI officers nabbed two persons travelling in a hatchback car near Fulbari. After the car was stopped, the officials found 10 gold bars, each weighing 1 kg, inside the vehicle. The gold bars had an inscription ‘SGE’ ( Shanghai Gold Exchange ), ‘Metalor’ and ‘Valcambi Sussie’—all marks of foreign origin of the metal.During interrogation the officials came to know that the two persons had carried the gold from Bhutan into India through Jaigaon- Phuentsholling border. The recovered gold bars were handed over by some Bhutanese origin nationals to the accused persons at a hotel situated in Phuentsholling.Earlier in June this year the DRI seized 32kg gold near Siliguri while it was being smuggled from China through the Nathula border. “While there are reports of gold smuggling through Bhutan, we have not seen it coming to Bengal.
