Cops ready for traffic rejig at Park Circus

The cops are gearing up for three months of traffic diversions after a portion of the southern flank of Circus Avenue is closed between Karaya Road and Beckbagan Row. Construction of the west-bound arm of Maa flyover connecting it with the AJC Bose flyover will lead to the closure from Tuesday midnight.“We are aware of its ramifications, especially in the first couple of days, as motorists would need time to understand the new traffic flow. We will be putting men in sufficient numbers for the job,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar. The no-entry plan is tentatively for four months but could be extended to five. Several signboards have been prepared for this purpose, claimed a police source.After the proposed traffic rejig, west-bound buses and minibuses will be debarred from entering Park Circus Connector from Parama Island between 6am and 11pm. The same will apply for heavy goods vehicle movement. West-bound smaller vehicles, till now availing the PC Connector-Congress Exhibition Road-Nasiruddin Road-Circus Avenue-AJC Bose Road combination, will be diverted through P C Connector-Congress Exhibition Road-Nasiruddin Road-Karaya Road-West Range-A.J.C. Bose Road for their onward journey.The buses of different routes availing Circus Avenue west bound will be diverted through Park Street before 1pm and Shakespeare Sarani between 1pm and 9pm. The buses of different routes availing Shakespeare Sarani after 1pm will be diverted via Park Street after 1pm till 8pm. All existing one-way restrictions will also simultaneously continue during this period.The rejig might hit traffic flow in large areas surrounding the Park Circus sevenpoint crossing. The crossing receives the largest numbers of vehicles from the Parama flyover and Syed Amir Ali Avenue. If traffic flow at the seven-point crossing slows down, the roads leading to it might witness snarls. Vehicles headed towards schools located in this area are likely to bear the impact of the change. “We are aware of the school dispersal timings. Our experience during the inauguration of first ramp will help us tackle this challenge,” said an officer from East traffic guard.
