MIDNAPORE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's Midnapore rally on Monday stayed within the expected script, with the Trinamool's "syndicate" raj and "misrule" coming in for special mention, till one of the three tents - meant to provide cover to the audience - collapsed 10 minutes into his speech.Ninety-nine people were injured as the iron poles supporting the tarpaulin cover gave way; BJP leaders and police attributed this to the rain-softened ground and "an overenthusiastic audience", some of whom climbed the poles to get a better view of the PM.Modi started speaking after a seven-minute gap, launching into Trinamool for its "syndicate raj" that "determined all aspects of life in Bengal... and which might even threaten the Pujas" and asking people to throw out a government that had "done more damage than what the Left did in 34 years"." Jagai unnayan ar Madhai unnayan hochchhe (The development in the state is for a chosen few)," the PM said, taking a dig at Trina-mool for lining up his route with massive Mamata Banerjee cutouts.The CM herself did not join issue but her party issued a point-by-point rebuttal. The signages that Modi saw were there all over Bengal as part of the preparations for the July 21 Shahid Divas programme, a statement issued by Trinamool secretary-general Partha Chatterjee and MP Derek O'Brien said."May we now ask how he plans to double farmers' income? In Bengal, farmers' income has more than tripled in six years, from Rs 91,000 in 2011 to Rs 2.9 lakh last year. The number of farmer suicides in the BJP-ruled Maharashtra was 635 in the first quarter of 2017; the figure for Bengal was zero," it added.
