After a week, JU V-C returns to campus

KOLKATA: Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das on Tuesday returned to the campus after a week, putting to rest speculation about his resignation.A day after resuming work from home, Das attended office on Tuesday for about 90 minutes. The minister stressed that JU should rather be treated as an autonomous university, free to take its own decisions. The VC will return to the campus next week, since he will be out of town for the next three days, flying out to Delhi for work.“He looked tired and said he was unwell. It is time to speak about the rest, and not only JU,” the minister said on Tuesday.

KOLKATA: Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das on Tuesday returned to the campus after a week, putting to rest speculation about his resignation.A day after resuming work from home, Das attended office on Tuesday for about 90 minutes. He signed documents, checked papers, gave instructions to colleagues over issues that required his intervention, and left for the day. The VC will return to the campus next week, since he will be out of town for the next three days, flying out to Delhi for work.“He looked tired and said he was unwell. The vice-chancellor is under medication and is regularly taking doctor’s advice, undergoing routine checkups,” said an official. Another teacher added, “Although he still has health issues, Das is slowly easing back into the pace of things. He was there only from 10.30am to noon. During the short while he was on campus, he met a few staff members and teachers, probably reacquainting himself with the day-to-day working of the university.”Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (Juta) representatives met Das on Tuesday at his office, asking about his health. “He told us that the doctor has advised rest. He has also lost some weight,” said a Juta member.On his way back home, the vice-chancellor dropped by at JU’s second campus in Salt Lake to meet pro-VC Pradip Ghosh, who was taking classes at the academic staff college. He stayed there for some time before heading home.“He is likely to resume duty from next week and will be available for appointments. As of now, he is still restricting his commute, so his schedule for the week is unclear. However, during his interaction with the senior JU officials or teachers, he did not broach the topic of agitation and gherao,” said a teacher. Education minister Partha Chatterjee refused to give any more attention to the JU admissions. “There are 32 state-aided universities in Bengal. It is time to speak about the rest, and not only JU,” the minister said on Tuesday. He also refused to give out details about his interactions with the JU vice-chancellor. The minister stressed that JU should rather be treated as an autonomous university, free to take its own decisions.
