2 kanwariya groups vandalize homes, molest women

KOLKATA: Two groups of Kanwariyas at a Lake Town neighbourhood clashed with each other on the eve of Independence Day, allegedly molesting and dragging women out of their houses, vandalizing cars and motorbikes, shattering window panes and ransacking houses, terrorizing residents of the area for the next two nights. Rivalry over which group would take out the “bigger and grander procession” was apparently the reason behind the fight.So far, 14 people have been arrested and the police are on the lookout for several others. Cops have been deployed in the neighbourhood.This was the second recorded incident of violence by Kanwariyas here this year. Another group last Sunday mandhandled a driver and vandalized his mini-truck at Beleghata after it allegedly brushed past one of them.Dakshindari residents said trouble started on August 3, when a group of Kanwariyas attacked a procession, led by a local club, right before they were leaving for Tarakeshwar. The other group took out their procession the next week, when the attacks took place. “On August 14, the two groups attacked each other with hockey sticks, bamboo and sharp weapons. Jiban Das, relative of Swapna Das, the complainant from the other group blamed the attack on Singh and other club members.
