Cancer patient donates land to set up med college

KOLKATA: A person suffering from cancer donated his land worth of Rs 5 crore to the local municipality in Hooghly district . Earlier, they donated land for cemetery. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered to set up a medical and nurse training college on the donated land.Achintya Kundu, a cancer patient of Hooghly district's Arambagh, has donated 5 bigha (one bigha equals to 1,618.7 square metres) land to set up a hospital for the people of the district. Achintya’s son Aranyadeep is also pursuing a medical degree.The Kundu family is well known for donating things for the benefit of the locality. Municipality chairman Swapan Nandi said, "We are honored to have such huge land."

On Sunday, he along with other councilors visited the site.Kundu, who owns a rice mill, lives at the 12 number word of Kalipur in Arambagh. His father, Harimohan Kundu was a well-known social worker of the area. After his death, Achintya decided to carry forward that legacy. Achintya’s son Aranyadeep is also pursuing a medical degree.The Kundu family is well known for donating things for the benefit of the locality. Earlier, they donated land for cemetery. Apart from that they have established a library bhawan for Kalipur Swamiji High School and few temples in the area.Achintya, who is suffering from throat and mouth cancer says, "I heard that government wanted to set up a medical college in Arambagh, but could not finalise land for that. So when I spoke to my mother, she asked me to donate the land. Then I approached them. I hope it will help the poor."
