KOLKATA: At a time when the commuters are experiencing bone-rattling rides on large stretches of city thoroughfares, mayor Sovan Chatterjee on Tuesday said that Kolkata could boast of having the most well-maintained roads in the entire country.While replying to a query from Congress councillor Prakash Upadhyay at the KMC monthly meeting, Chatterjee said the civic body was committed to give citizens potholefree roads at all cost. Upadhyay wanted to know when would KMC undertake a thorough repair of battered roads and arterial roads like EM Bypass and Diamond Harbour Road. He complained that shoddy patchwork on rain-ravaged roads could not guarantee respite to the citizens as the roads were crying for a thorough repair.In reply, the mayor made it clear that under no circumstances the KMC roads department would go for a thorough repair during monsoon as that would result in waste of funds. Chatterjee, however, assured that all measures would be taken to ensure that major city roads would come under a comprehensive repair package before the Pujas. While saying this, the mayor also expressed satisfaction about the condition of Kolkata’s roads and compared the same to roads of other metros. “Kolkata can boast of having the best-maintained roads in the entire country. I get regular feedback from the KMC councillors who don’t complain about roads in their wards,” Chatterjee said.However, Left Front councillors alleged that despite repeated requests to the civic roads department to undertake repair work on several roads across the city, no work was undertaken. Chayan Bhattacharya, a CPM councillor, said stretches of roads in Tollygunge , including Deshapran Sashmal Road and NSC Bose Road, have developed craters despite the recent patchwork.KMC officials conceded that several stretches of major roads were yet to get patchwork. An official pointed out at condition of Circus Avenue, M G Road, R G Kar Road and S P Mukherjee Road that have developed potholes.
