KOLKATA: A 35-year-old homemaker from Muraripukur Road succumbed to dengue on Monday, taking the unofficial death toll to six in the city and its fringes this season. Krishna Hazra’s death certificate issued by the hospital mentioned dengue shock syndrome with multi-organ failure.Kolkata Municipal Corporation MMiC (health) Atin Ghosh, however, said the corporation had sought a report from the hospital before officially declaring it as a “dengue death”.“At present, we have three patients — all from the Beliaghata locality — with dengue fever and all are stable. There is no question of medical negligence in any of the cases,” said Satsih Agarwal, general manager of the private nursing home, where Hazra had been admitted.Hazra, a resident of 14, Muraripukur Road near Ulatadanga, was admitted on August 2 with complaints of fever, abdominal pain and very low blood pressure. Her blood samples tested positive for dengue. The patient’s condition kept deteriorating since being admitted and she had been put on ventilation for about two weeks before she died.According to doctors, her platelet and haemoglobin counts had gone down drastically and she had to be given two units of platelet. But by the time the blood count started improving, the virus had already affected her organs. She had viral hepatitis induced by dengue, which affected her liver. Her kidneys, too, had been badly affected, “Despite all efforts to support her organs, the patient’s condition kept sinking,” said Dr Debraj Dey Purkayastha, medical superintendent of the nursing home.Hazra was a resident of KIT housing complex, which houses 272 families. At least three others in the complex have been affected by dengue this year.“This locality had a number of dengue cases and deaths last year. But nothing has been done to control mosquito breeding. I hope the authorities concerned take notice before more lives are claimed,” said Hazra’s husband Adhir. On Tuesday, 11-year-old Aarush Dutta from Maniktala had died in a private hospital off EM Bypass. With Hazra’s death, the city and its fringes this season have had at least four denguerelated deaths in the KMC area and two in the Bidhannanagar Municipal Corporation area. The health department, however, has not accepted all of them as results of dengue. “A panel is analyzing documents related to these deaths to conclude if they were caused by dengue,” said a Swasthya Bhawan official .
