A massive fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday in the central part of the Kolkata's congested Bagri Market on Canning Street. A total of 30 fire engines were rushed to the spot. "We are trying our best but firefighting operation is tough here because of the number of buildings. No injuries have been reported," said Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee. The massive fire broke out at around 2:45 am on Sunday. The blaze was so huge that black smoke took over the whole Bagri Market area in Kolkata soon after the fire broke out. The fire at the five-storeyed building started from the ground floor as per the reports and spread in a lightning-fast speed due to numerous inflammable stock inside the building. The building in subject has numerous medicine shops, cosmetics and jewellery outlets. A massive fire broke out in a multi-story building early Sunday in the central part of the city's congested Bagree Market on Canning street, a senior official of the fire department said. This is the second major incident to have occurred in Kolkata after the 50-year-old Majherhat flyover collapsed in South Kolkata on September 6. Three people were killed in the accident. Prayers! ???? — Jeet (@jeet30) September 16, 2018 # During the operation, one firefighter has been reportedly injured. # People who resided in the top floor of the building, managed to escape as soon as the fire broke out, as per unconfirmed reports. # “I have lost everything in the blaze just before Durga Puja. My store as well as a godown was gutted in the fire,” Anil Mehta, an angry shop owner said as quoted by PTI. # “Nobody is trapped in the building. Also, no report of any casualty or injury has reached us,” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters at the airport. # "Even after five hours, we are finding it difficult to contain the fire," he added. # "As the area is very congested, we are finding it difficult to work. We are using hydraulic ladder and gas cutters to cut through the grills of the gates and small windows to enter the building," a senior official of the fire department said.
