Rly ministry approves Majerhat level crossing

KOLKATA: The Ministry of Railways finally approved level crossing across Majerhat Railway yard connecting Alipore avenue in north and New Alipore Block E road in the south, 500 meters east of collapsed Majerhat bridge on Wednesday. The letter from the ministry of railways said that it is temporary arrangement and the level crossing must be done away with once new Majerhat Road over bridge is ready for traffic. The city police is likely to run tidal movement of traffic (one way peak-directional movement). Following the collapse of Majerhat bridge, Bengal government was desperate to find a shortest way out to channelize peak hour traffic to peak hour direction.The level crossing, Kolkata traffic police said, would facilitate faster dispersal of north bound vehicles during morning peak hours and south bound vehicles in the evening peak hours. The level crossing, cops said, would take away pressure from the two-lane Durgapur Bridge, which is now taking almost 70 per cent of the load of four-lane Majerhat bridge.Both PWD and Railways engineers swung into action at the site on Wednesday as they have steep deadline to meet; throwing the level crossing open for traffic on Mahalaya.
