KOLKATA: The deceased organ donation drive in the state will receive a shot in the arm with the city set to witness its seventh organ donation this year — only 10 days after the previous one. The family of a 57-year-old woman, who had suffered irreversible brain stem death, gave their consent to the donation. Till last reports came in, efforts were being made to harvest her liver. A 50-year-old man, a Haldia resident, will be the recipient at SSKM Hospital.Doctors said donor Monika Kar was suffering from renal problem and hence her kidneys and heart were not fit for transplant. The homemaker from New Town, who was on dialysis , fell at her home on Tuesday. She was rushed to Medica Superspecialty Hospital where doctors detected brain haemorrhage. The doctors consulted her family members, who then gave their nod.Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) at SSKM was informed. The nodal agency for organ allocation in eastern India allocated the liver to SSKM Hospital. It will be transplanted on the Haldia man at SSKM’s School of Liver and Digestive Diseases.“The recipient previously had travelled to hospitals in south India for treatment. If everything happens as per plans, the transplant surgery should happen in the wee hours of Friday,” said Dr Abhijit Chowdhury , the hepatology head who had played a vital role in setting up the SDLD. The donor’s cornea may also be harvested. This is the second deceased organ donation this month that comes after a similar donation by the relatives of Ranjan Roy (49) at CMRI on October 2.
