'Unfit' liver prompts docs to cancel transplant

KOLKATA: Doctors found the liver of 57-year-old Monika Kar, who was declared brain dead and whose family gave their consent to an organ donation a day before, unfit for the transplant. "We worked hard to make the transplant happen. They did this in the interest of the recipient," said Rupayan Roy, who later underwent a successful heart transplant surgery in the same year. Doctors, though, said such last-minute changes can happen in deceased organ donations and this should not hit the organ donation drive that's picking up momentum in the state. "The awareness on organ donation is on the rise.

KOLKATA: Doctors found the liver of 57-year-old Monika Kar, who was declared brain dead and whose family gave their consent to an organ donation a day before, unfit for the transplant. Doctors, though, said such last-minute changes can happen in deceased organ donations and this should not hit the organ donation drive that's picking up momentum in the state."I was being prepared at the OT for a heart transplant surgery in Fortis Malar in 2016 when doctors decided to call it off at the last moment when they found the condition of the donor's heart was not good. They did this in the interest of the recipient," said Rupayan Roy, who later underwent a successful heart transplant surgery in the same year. Roy got lucky during the third attempt when the donor organ was found to be fit."We worked hard to make the transplant happen. Last-minute changes can happen in deceased organ donation. But the fact that more people are accepting brain deaths and agreeing to organ donation is very positive," said Dr Abhijit Chowdhury , hepatology head at SSKM Hospital.Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) had earlier allocated the liver of Kar to SSKM Hospital after the donor's family consented to the organ donation."The awareness on organ donation is on the rise. We will always extend our support to organ transplantation initiatives," said Dr Alok Roy, chairman, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, where the patient was declared brain dead. The plan for the transplant was abandoned around 2am on Friday when doctors on opening the liver found that it was not in a good condition. The donor's cornea, however, was harvested and it was sent to the eye bank of a private hospital.
