KOLKATA: An overcast sky and intermittent drizzles kept Puja revellers on the edge on Saturday after an overnight spell of heavy shower drenched Kolkata. Even as cyclone Titli weakened into a well-marked low pressure and sailed through Gangetic Bengal to Bangladesh , thundershowers struck some of the coastal districts of the state as well. The city, however, was spared heavy showers during the day with the Met office predicting clear weather from Monday. The sun could finally be out on Sunday.“The system has now passed over and will have no further impact on the weather in Bengal. The skies, however, could remain partially clouded on Sunday. But the sun could be peeking through the clouds after several days. The cloud cover should recede on Monday and the weather will be fair till the end of Puja on October 19,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director G K Das.Possibility of light showers has, however, not been ruled out. “In the absence of big rain-bearing systems, local clouds may form owing to the presence of moisture in the atmosphere. It could lead to short spells of rain but such a possibility is slim,” added Das.As cyclone Titli entered Gangetic Bengal around midnight on Friday, a spell of heavy showers lashed Kolkata. But the rain waned by early morning. Since the system had weakened, the rain was intense only for a short while. We have no rain-bearing systems now and it will be clear from Monday. On Friday morning, Titli started losing steam and turned into a deep depression and moved in the northeasterly direction at a speed of about 12 km/hour from Keonjhargarh in Odisha. It continued in the same direction till Saturday afternoon and weakened into a low pressure as it journeyed through Bengal towards Bangladesh. The districts of Midnapore, South and North 24 Parganas and Nadia were lashed by heavy rain and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday.
