KOLKATA: Cops in Dantan in West Midnapore initiated an investigation after a Kolkata-based artist took to social media to narrate her experience at a function on the night of November 10 where she was allegedly subjected to lewd comments and misbehaviour.Mekhla Dasgupta, who has been a part of several music shows on regional and national platforms, was invited to perform at an event organized by Gram Rakshi Bahini , which comprises members from the constabulary and villagers.In two subsequent ‘Facebook Live’ streams, Mekhla claimed that some people in the audience continuously passed lewd comments. She headed to Dantan police station nearby when the comments did not stop. Nearly 10,000 people had assembled to watch her perform.In the video, the singer claimed, “I was asked to sing peppy songs so that everybody could dance to the numbers. I was also told to move close to the officers while performing. When I refused, lewd comments were passed from the audience. I never thought I would be humiliated like this. The IC helped me get out of the place.”Dantan police station in charge Subrata Majumdar, however, said, “There were no police officers in the crowd or on the dais.”West Midnapore SP Alok Rajoria said, “We have not received any written complaint, but the matter has come to our notice through social media. I have ordered an inquiry.”
