(Representational image) (Representational image) The police on Tuesday arrested four persons, suspecting them of being Maoists, in Jangalmahal area. Following this, some people protested against the arrests on Wednesday, saying the four were only conducting a survey. Police said the arrested have been identified as Sabyasachi Goswami, Sanjiv Mazumdar, Akadip Goswami and Tipu Sultan. While two of them are students, Goswami had been arrested earlier for alleged ties to Maoist organisations. Police officials of Goyaltor police station surrounded the jungle area under Makli Gram Panchayat and carried out a search operation. They made the arrests near Kanjimakoli football ground in Jangalmahal. Sources said the four have been charged under sections 124A (sedition), 121 (waging or attempt to wage war), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. Police claimed they recovered “Maoist leaflets” from their possession. Following this, members of the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) and Jadavpur University students organised a protest over the arrests in Kolkata. Condemning the arrest, APDR vice-president Ranjit Sur said, “Two of them are in their early twenties and are students. They all were in Jangalmahal for a survey, while police have arrested them under serious charges like sedition. This is strange that no one other than the Trinamool Congress can visit Jangalmahal. If anyone is found roaming in the area, either he will be murdered or put behind bars under such serious charges. We will continue to protest against their arrest and demand police to release them unconditionally.” Police sources said they had acted upon receiving information about outsider movement in the area. “They were arrested maintaining all legal procedures. These are sensitive areas and suspicious movement cannot be taken lightly,” said a police officer. For all the latest Kolkata News, download Indian Express App
