KOLKATA: At a time when Bidhannagar civic authorities are on their toe to stop hawkers from occupying pavements in Salt Lake , residents of a Block came together and foiled an attempt to set up illegal structures on the bank of the canal in the township.Artist Niranjan Pradhan , who lives in AE Block, recently noticed that a group of unidentified people had started building a large shanty-like structure in front of his house by the side of the Kestopur canal . The spot where the illegal bamboo structure was being built falls under the irrigation department and is located in Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta’s ward. After Pradhan pointed it out to the local residents’ association, the matter was taken up with Dutta following which, a civic team from the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation pulled it down on Wednesday. It was only a few days ago that the local residents’ association, led by its president Manimoy Saha, had resisted the setting up of a similarly illegal structure at a vacant plot in the locality.Pradhan, whose house is on the canal side road at AE Block, said he noticed some people meet at the fenced-off green stretch by the canal every day—they entered the area by breaking down the fence—and assemble bamboo sticks. “I could hear something being set up there. Curious, I asked them what were they up to. They claimed they were clearing the thick undergrowth and were setting up a shade to take rest under it,” Pradhan said. But he sensed something was amiss and told local Block committee secretary Tapas Sengupta about it. “One day, Sengupta and I entered the green patch to see a bamboo structure coming up, with a tarpaulin sheet covering it on the top,” Pradhan said. The block association immediately contacted the civic authorities. “We had a talk with other Block committee members and informed the civic authorities that an illegal bamboo structure was coming up,” said Sengupta, secretary of AE Block Samaj Kalyan Sangha. Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta sent a civic team to the spot on Wednesday, when the structure was pulled down in the presence of the residents.Commending the tip-off, Dutta said, “No illegal shanty or structure would be allowed to come up. We appeal all the residents of the township to inform the civic authorities whenever they learn about any illegal act so that we can take quick action.”
