Litter streets and pay clean-up bill to KMC

KOLKATA: People who litter streets after KMC workers clear up the garbage may face strict action. Officials in the KMC solid waste management department said teams would be formed ward-wise under a conservancy assistant director that will regularly keep a watch on the litter-prone areas. “Any cases of littering of streets would be dealt with severely,” said a KMC official.However, a section of the solid waste management department conceded that it would be difficult to pinpoint offenders. Mayor Firhad Hakim on Monday said the civic body would not tolerate dumping of waste on roads or streets. Even after this, if public places are found littered, KMC will slap fines on offenders.

KOLKATA: People who litter streets after KMC workers clear up the garbage may face strict action. The civic body will clear the garbage, irrespective of whether the premises are owned by private, state or central agencies, and then ask the owners or occupiers to foot the bill.KMC clears up garbage in shifts, two in residential places and three in commercial places. Even after this, if public places are found littered, KMC will slap fines on offenders. Mayor Firhad Hakim on Monday said the civic body would not tolerate dumping of waste on roads or streets. “We may have to get tough with people who have been regularly littering Kolkata’s streets. We will impose penalty depending on the gravity of the misdeed,” he told reporters.However, KMC can’t levy the penalty on its own. It will have to move the municipal court against the offenders and the judge has to decide on the amount of fine.
