Cattle seizure drive after New Town accident

The government had framed a law to bar livestock owners from letting loose their cattle to graze on vacant plots in New Town. KOLKATA: An accident on Rajarhat Expressway near Eco Park on Monday afternoon, in which a car lost control and keeled over while trying to save a cow that suddenly came on the main carriageway, has prompted the authorities to intensify a cattle seizure drive On Monday, a middle-aged man driving a four-month-old Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire rammed a median divider while trying to avoid collision with a cow. “The riders were wearing seatbelts and the fact that airbags were deployed on time saved the driver and a woman. Otherwise, the accident could have been fatal,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.In October last year, three people, including a 6-year-old kid, had died when a bike skidded while trying to save a cow.Accidents triggered by cows and buffaloes straying on the road has been an issue on Rajarhat and New Town roads. The government had framed a law to bar livestock owners from letting loose their cattle to graze on vacant plots in New Town. As per sections 130A and 130B of New Town Kolkata Development (amendment) Authority Act, 2018, such cattle can be impounded by the authorities and the strays would be auctioned, if not claimed by their owners by paying a fine.Following Monday’s accident, the authorities swung into action and seized three such strays. The drive continued on Tuesday as three more stray cows were seized from the New Town roads and were brought to the cattle shelter in Action Area 1D.NKDA officials said the seizure drives are carried out at least twice a week but they will now increase the frequency of the crackdown.
