KOLKATA: Doctors at SSKM Hospital on Thursday terminated the pregnancy of the 32-year-old woman, who had received permission from the high court to undergo the procedure. She had moved the court in the 24th week of conception, after she crossed the legally permissible period of 20 weeks to go for medical termination of pregnancy (MTP).She underwent the procedure without any hitch on Thursday morning. Sources said she was doing fine. But it would take a day or two before she is discharged after completing some formalities.“I have informed Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty after the MTP was completed around 1.15pm. I also apprised him of the overall condition of my client,” said advocate Amitabha Ghosh, the 32-year-old woman’s counsel.On Monday, the court had given a go-ahead for the MTP after getting a report from the SSKM medical board that had recommended abortion , as the foetus had a tumor in the brain that would render it neurologically challenged. On Saturday, the medical board had examined the petitioner and assessed the condition of the foetus thoroughly before submitting its report to the court.The court had asked the state to make all necessary arrangement for the woman to be admitted to SSKM immediately so that she could undergo the procedure as soon as possible.While passing the order, Justice Chakraborty had asked Amitabha Ghosh to apprise the court of the development and the condition of the petitioner.The woman was admitted on Tuesday under P S Chakraborty, the head of gynaecology and obstetrics . The process began right on that day. She was given medicines to stop the heart beat of the foetus. The actual MTP was carried out on Thursday.
