KOLKATA: The family of the late Amitava Bose , renowned economics professor and former director of IIM Calcutta, has donated Rs 1crore to the institute, which has decided to set up a corpus with the endowment and use it for research in economics analysis and policy.Named Amitava Bose Lab for Economic Analysis and Policy (ABLEAP) Fund, it will be utilized to set up a laboratory and for other initiatives, such as Amitava Bose Scholar-in-Residence Programme, Amitava Bose Memorial Prize for best performance in economics, Amitava Bose Memorial Lecture, workshops on economic analysis and research support for students. The fund, if required, will also be used for unfunded research. “The Amitava Bose Lab for Economic Analysis and Policy Fund is a great initiative that honours the former IIM-C director and provides students and faculty with an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of economics and policy-related matters,” IIM-C director Anju Seth said. With the help of the work under the fund, researchers and scholars can network and stay connected with other researchers during events.The dean of new initiatives and external relations, Prashant Mishra, said, “The fund will help us carry forward the Bose’s legacy in achieving excellence in research in economics. The lab will help researchers, scholars and students pursue their interest in analysis and policy. This fund will be the first to be contributed by a faculty’s family and not the alumni. A committee has been formed under the leadership of the dean academic to draft an annual plan to utilize the fund.” Dean academic Runa Sarkar said, “It will be utilized to set up an award for best performing PGP student in economics and support research of any doctoral candidate. We will also have series of lectures and workshops of eminent scholars in economics and policy making. Students will get exposure to a wide array of thinking and academic scholarship.”“Bose was one of the most respected colleagues and loved director. Such donations allow the institute to be a little more flexible as it enables people to work together.
