HC gets 5 more judges, strength rises to 41

KOLKATA: The strength of Calcutta High Court’s bench rose to 41 from 36 with Tuesday’s swearing in of five judges by acting Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder. This is the first time since 2006 that the number of Calcutta HC judges crossed 40.The judges who took oath of office at Courtroom No. Association president Uttam Majumdar, High Court Bar Library Club president Jayanta Mitra and Incorporated Law Society of Calcutta secretary Paritosh Sinha welcomed the appointments. President Ramnath Kovind issued their warrant of appointment last week.A year ago, the number of judges of Calcutta HC had reached an all-time low of 27.

This is the first time since 2006 that the number of Calcutta HC judges crossed 40.The judges who took oath of office at Courtroom No. 1 of the High Court building are Justices Md Nizamuddin, Tirthankar Ghosh, Sougata Bhattacharyya, Hiranmoy Bhattacharyya and Manojit Mandal.The names of those who took oath on Tuesday were approved by the Supreme Court collegium last year.
