KOLKATA: An injured Suranjan Das, the vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University , had to be ferried in a stretcher from his office to an ambulance and rushed to a private hospital on Tuesday evening after students demanding immediate union elections heckled him when he was leaving Aurobindo Bhavan, the main administrative building, after attending the executive council meeting. Later at the hospital, he underwent clinical tests and X-ray.According to a bulletin by AMRI Hospitals in Dhakuria , Das was admitted in the evening, at around 6pm, after he got injured when two groups of students got into a scuffle around him.“Suranjan Das was administered necessary medicines and he underwent X-ray of his right shoulder chest and hip-bone, areas injured when he fell down. His blood pressure shot up a bit and doctors are keeping him under observation given pre existing conditions like hypertension and high level of blood sugar for which he takes regular medicines. His condition is stable,” a release from the hospital said.In his emergency registration form, Das gave a declaration that although he got injured during a scuffle between students, he was not willing to press any charges or lodge a formal police complaint. Education minister Partha Chatterjee said, “It is not possible to hold the elections now. He was rescued by a section of staff, another group of students, security personnel inside the campus and some teachers, who rushed from the EC meeting to help Das. He was taken inside Aurobindo Bhavan where he complained of uneasiness and anxiety. He was then taken to the hospital.While leaving the campus Das said that he has been pushed and shoved. “What kind of behaviour is this coming from students? There is a way of presenting one’s point of view. There is scope of debate and discussion in a democratic manner. But, this scuffle has made me feel unwell,” Das said while leaving the campus.Debraj Debnath, student of PG I, said 11 students were also injured. “The entire thing was triggered by students who sympathise with the ruling party. We will take out a procession at 3pm on Wednesday and observe ‘dhikkar diwas’,” he said, adding that over 100 students were sitting on a dharna inside the campus.The students on Tuesday staged a sit-in-demonstration in front of Aurobindo Bhavan as EC meeting progressed inside the administrative building. They demanded to present a memorandum asking the VC to hold an immediate student union election. Their demand was declined by the EC members which led to the agitation.
