10 passengers hurt as racing buses collide

KOLKATA: Ten people, including three women, were injured when two Ultadanga-bound private buses racing each other collided in Kestopur on Friday morning. A while later, traffic police started controlling movement of the buses and kept a close watch on speeding vehicles in the area. The injured were taken to a local private hospital and their condition was stated to be stable. “This led to a sudden jerk and so many passengers were injured. The passengers were flung off their seats on impact and several of them sustained injuries.

KOLKATA: Ten people, including three women, were injured when two Ultadanga-bound private buses racing each other collided in Kestopur on Friday morning. The injured were taken to a local private hospital and their condition was stated to be stable. Police have seized one of the vehicles and arrested its driver.According to locals, two buses on routes KB 21 and 44 had been racing for a while and the former was trying to overtake the route 44 bus around 7am when they crashed. The passengers were flung off their seats on impact and several of them sustained injuries. The drivers had tried to flee the spot after the collision, but they were caught by locals and handed over to the police.“It was around 7am and there was not much traffic. Both buses were headed to Ultadanga and they suddenly started to pick up speed in a bid to reach the crossing first,” said a witness. The buses were speeding when the accident happened. “This led to a sudden jerk and so many passengers were injured. People hit the iron bars in the buses and many were flung off their seats. Fortunately, the police responded quickly and the injured were shifted to a local hospital,” said another local resident.The early morning accident sparked tension in the locality. A while later, traffic police started controlling movement of the buses and kept a close watch on speeding vehicles in the area. Police said that the Kestopur area had become highly accident prone. They said that even though they tried to control vehicular movement, some bus drivers often flouted norms.On Thursday, too, three passengers travelling in an auto were severely injured when the auto was hit by a bus on the service road beside VIP Road near Kestopur.Traffic policemen said there was high propensity among the drivers to overtake other vehicles along VIP Road, which was one of the leading causes of accidents in that area.“The bus on route 46 had tried to overtake the auto from the left when it rammed into the three-wheeler around 10am. Both vehicles were heading towards Baguiati from Ultadanga. A woman and her daughter suffered minor injuries while the auto driver and another passenger were admitted to a private hospital,” police said. The police had seized the bus on Thursday.
