CID looks for experts to crack cyber crimes

The agency has had to take help from organizations like the state forensic laboratory during investigations. According to sources, experts with first class in MCA or MSc in IT or computer science or in robotics will form a team that will be groomed to tackle cyber crime in future."There is a plan to develop a cyber lab, specializing in cyber forensics. The laboratory will be equipped to perform tasks like collecting call details from cellphones or scouring data in a hard disk," said a CID officer. The state has decided to open a cyber police station in each jdistrict.The CID is also looking for experts in social media analysis. Sources said that dealing with big data and high-speed computers will require tremendous computing power that might need artificial intelligence applications, robotics and machine learning. These technologies are required to break encryptions."There had been cases in the past few years in which investigations and convictions depended largely on electronic evidence. In some of the cases, electronic evidence alone helped in the entire investigation," said CID's cyber crime lawyer Bivas Chatterjee.In a case last year, a woman from Midnapore fell victim to cyber crime and her photos were circulated in WhatsApp groups. The CID started tracking the groups created by the accused and identified three offenders. "While the state agencies might still need help from agencies like the state forensic laboratory, the in-house laboratory will speed up investigations," Chatterjee said.
