KOLKATA: Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty of Calcutta High Court , along with his personal security officer and his driver, had a narrow escape on Maa flyover on Sunday night when a youth, driving drunk at a breakneck speed, tried to overtake his vehicle from the wrong side at the beginning of the new AJC Bose Road-bound flank dangerouly. Fearing the accused, Soumik Pandey (26), might crash his vehicle, Justice Chakraborty’s PSO Badal Dey lodged a complaint. The youth, who along with four of his friends, was returning from a pub, was arrested.The incident took place around 11pm, when many vehicles were seen speeding owing to reduced traffic volume.Pandey was not only driving dangerously—putting his and others’ lives at risk—he also reportedly badmouthed another family travelling in a car in the same direction. Finally, it was Dey, on whose insistence, their driver chased Pandey’s car and stopped him on the AJC Bose Road-bound flank. A vehicle with cops from the East traffic guard , alerted by Dey, also arrived at the spot a little later. Pandey, a resident of Ballygunge Place, was arrested by the cops at the Beniapukur police station on charges of rash driving and other sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. Four occupants in his car were questioned and released later.According to the FIR, a copy of which is with TOI, Justice Chakraborty had reached the bifurcation on Maa flyover—known as Topsia cutout —when a private car (WB-02AL-2543), headed for the same direction, pulled up from behind. “It was being driven in a rash and negligent manner, endangering human life and safety of others and it suddenly tried to dash the car in which Justice Chakraborty was travelling. The accused also verbally abused the occupants of another car when the accused driver failed to get past them onto the new link,” the FIR stated.An investigating officer confirmed Pandey was driving drunk. “On being stopped, he was told to take a breath analyser test, which showed he was drunk. Four occupants in the car—Gopal Krisan, Ajoy Kumar, Vivek Mondal and Dilawar Hossain, all of them Pandey’s friends — were questioned and released. Pandey was arrested,” he said. Pandey told cops he and his friends were returning from a pub at Sector V.
