KOLKATA: Even as Sunday’s twin thunderstorms turned Kolkata cooler on Monday, the Met office spied yet another storm on Tuesday. We expect the maximum temperature to climb up to 34-35 degrees between Wednesday and Thursday. Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 19.7 degree Celsius which was four notches below normal. The maximum was 33.9 degrees, a degree below normal.“We have a new circulation which is moving towards Jharkhand at a good pace. KOLKATA: Even as Sunday’s twin thunderstorms turned Kolkata cooler on Monday, the Met office spied yet another storm on Tuesday. A new cyclonic circulation that has formed over Madhya Pradesh is set to sail into the region and trigger rain, it said. But with no other system in the vicinity, the city should remain dry and warm from Wednesday. Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 19.7 degree Celsius which was four notches below normal. The maximum was 33.9 degrees, a degree below normal.“We have a new circulation which is moving towards Jharkhand at a good pace. It should reach Jharkhand and could lead to another thunderstorm. But this one could be the last for a while since there is no other system that can trigger thunderstorms,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das.With rain-bearing systems moving away, the city could finally witness a warm spell later this week. “A dry period of 3-5 days is enough to pull the mercury up. We expect the maximum temperature to climb up to 34-35 degrees between Wednesday and Thursday. If it will climb further will depend on the formation of rain-triggering systems. If they cease to flow into the region, we will have summer conditions,” added Das.The gulf between the maximum and minimum temperatures jumped to 14 degrees on Monday. It wasn’t unusual during the pre-summer period when thunderstorms strike, said Das. “We had two thunderstorms, the second one with a speed of 72 km/hr that cooled the city considerably. It helped to keep the early morning temperature in check. But as the day wore on, the sun came out and the mercury climbed again,” Das explained.Sunday’s thunderstorms were triggered by a cyclonic circulation that developed over the Vidharbha region on Friday. It reached Jharkhand on Sunday afternoon and struck the city at around 5 pm. But since the accompanying wind speed was less than 45 km/hr, it didn’t qualify as a squall. The second one struck at around 7.25 pm and was fiercer.
