KOLKATA: Parents of more than 200 boarders of the Presidency University Salt Lake hostel have told their daughters to abide by the 9.30pm deadline to return to the premises after the authorities sought their opinion on the issue. The boarders had written to university authorities last month to drop the deadline. The university authorities after discussing the matter with the Students’ Welfare Board decided to seek the opinions of guardians as it involved the “safety of the boarders”. According to a university official, several parents have already replied by either supporting the 9.30pm deadline or letting the university decide “what is good for the girls”.One of the boarders said many parents have communicated their disapproval to their daughters over the deadline issue and instructed them to abide by the hostel rules.“However, there are others who do not have any issue relaxing the 9.30pm deadline,” she said.“Our demand to drop the 9.30pm deadline to report back to the hostel is legitimate. But the university authorities decided to refer it to our guardians instead of having a dialogue with us. All of us are adults and can decide on our own. Many girls are in a dilemma now after the intervention of their parents. We shall meet soon and decide the next course of action,” said a boarder who is pursuing post-graduation from the university.Dean of students Arun Kumar Maity did not comment on the feedback received from the parents, but confirmed that many of them had reverted. “Several parents have written to us. We are expecting more feedback in the next few days. I will place everything before the Students’ Welfare Board, which will take the final decision,” said Maity. The boarders have argued that they return to the hostel from classes only an hour or so before the deadline sets in and they hardly get time to step out to grab a bite or watch a movie. “The rules are not enforced strictly at Eden Hostel, which indicates a gender bias in the attitude of the authorities,” a boarder said.
