KOLKATA: Last year, residents of Salt Lake had to negotiate pathetic road stretches almost throughout the year as no repair work could be carried out till December. This year, though, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken up repair work early. After getting funds sanctioned from the urban development department, work to lay new bituminous surface on the battered roads in Salt Lake was kicked off at AE Block on Monday. The contractors had already done relaying work last week on the damaged lanes inside the Block that falls under Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta’s ward 31.“The lanes that are in poor shape will be repaired very soon. We are hoping that rain will not hamper our work now,” said a civic official. The civic authorities have received administrative approval of Rs 74 crore from the urban development department for repairing roads across 41 wards.Civic authorities want to complete the work in all the wards of BMC before the onset of the monsoon so that the authorities can only concentrate on maintenance work after that.Last year, road repair in Salt Lake and other places under BMC was severely hit as contractors refused to take up work due to pending dues. The repair work was taken up only in December after the dues were cleared. Apart from heavy rainfall, several stretches in Salt Lake and Rajarhat were damaged after the road surface was dug up for laying pipelines for supply of water from New Town water treatment plant.Looking into the situation, state urban development department minister Firhad Hakim held a stocktaking meeting with BMC officials in January this year where the issue of bad roads was discussed. The civic authorities were asked to prepare a detailed proposal on road repairs for all the 41wards which was later submitted by BMC.Residents are happy that the civic body has taken up road repair work early this year. “It’s good that they have taken up the repair work on an urgent basis this year considering the fact that work was severely hampered last year,” said Bidhannagar Welfare Association secretary Sarat Mullick.
