The civic team cordoned off the area immediately and dug up a part of the road to plug the hole. It will help civic workers in case of a breach,” the KMC official said on Wednesday. “We could not manage to remove heaps of sand to reach the water pipe. The sand bed prevented civic workers from reaching to the damaged valve. But the civic body is still working hard to repair the breach at Cossipore.

KOLKATA: After struggling for two successive nights, a team of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) engineers on Wednesday morning finally managed to repair a major leak in a water pipe under Chittaranjan Avenue near Ram Mandir. But the civic body is still working hard to repair the breach at Cossipore. The removal of a Raj-era pipe at Wellington Square, which is scheduled on Saturday, also seems to be a tough task.It wasn’t easy for the civic workers to go 20ft under the road and start repairing a valve of an ancillary water pipe which is linked to the main pipe line that caters to the drinking water needs of large areas in north and central Kolkata.KMC engineers first noticed water gushing out of the underground pipe near Ram Mandir on Saturday morning. The civic team cordoned off the area immediately and dug up a part of the road to plug the hole. But, a sand bed tunred out to be the major stumbling block for the workers. It was built at the time of north-south Metro rail construction. The sand bed prevented civic workers from reaching to the damaged valve. “We could not manage to remove heaps of sand to reach the water pipe. Continuous supply of water through the pipe made our task more difficult. During the day, we could not continue with the repair process as that would lead to traffic snarl,” said a civic engineer.A crack team was formed and the team started a special drive from Monday night. “On Monday night, we struggled to remove sand and reach the breached pipe. But the next night, the task was made possible by a group of dedicated workers who risked their lives and worked through the night, standing in chest-deep water. They finally reached the spot where the valve of the 6-inch pipe had broken into pieces. The workers blocked the pipe from both ends to stop the flow of water from the 42-inch main pipe running parallel to it,” said a KMC official. However, a section of the KMC water supply department felt the civic body should find a permanent solution for emergency repair of the 42-inch main water pipe, keeping in mind the sand bed. “The 42-inch pipe is more than 120-year-old and has become vulnerable. We will sit together with the experts and find a solution. It will help civic workers in case of a breach,” the KMC official said on Wednesday.
