KOLKATA: The Election Commission has set a tall target for the Kolkata Police and the cops too, it seems, are trying their best to live up to the challenge. In the past five days, they have executed 100-odd warrants, bringing down the number of pending non-bailable warrants (NBWs) to 656.Chief electoral officer in West Bengal has identified probable trouble-makers in Kolkata after deputy election commissioner Sudeep Jain asked all the police and administrative officials to identify all such people and make preventive arrests. On Wednesday, Kolkata Police said all such people have been accounted for. Now, with 656 NBWs still pending, the asking rate for the cops is around 13 warrants per day till Kolkata goes to poll on May 19.But if one considers the first phase of polls in Bengal (April 11) to be the EC deadline, then the asking rate is much higher — executing 44 NBWs per day.The EC’s “trouble-mongers” figure is different from that of the non-bailable warrants executed by police.“We can now say that all warrants have been accounted for even if arrests are still being carried out. There is not one unaccounted for case in all our nine divisions,” said an officer.“There has been an increase in the number of people who have been identified as the probable source of trouble. Moreover, it should be noticed that this is not the final list. This is based on the present situation. The identification process is on and we’ve seen many people entering the state form bordering states during elections. This will also increase the number,” a senior election commission official said.Though Kolkata Police has refused to share the numbers, it is clear that cops have so far executed around 3,000 non-bailable warrants — not all of them finding a place on the EC list.Sources said this list also includes criminals who are dominant in certain pockets or arrested in the city with arms. Lalbazar though denied it is under any pressure. The poll panel has asked DMs to start deleting from voter lists the names of the absconding people. “Some such names have already been deleted. The process is on,” said another official.
